What If Your Home Could Feel Completely Different?

What if your home could feel completely different without losing its story?

What if the dark, disconnected rooms that once felt closed off could become bright, intentional, and inviting?

What if thoughtful architectural design could transform not only the appearance of a home, but also the way you experience it every single day?

These were the questions that guided the design of our Marietta Modern Home.

The existing home had strong potential but lacked the cohesion and architectural presence the homeowners envisioned. Through thoughtful design, the exterior was transformed into a contemporary home that reflects the interior experience.

An Existing Home with Untapped Potential

Like many renovation projects, the existing home had strong underlying potential but no longer reflected the way the homeowners wanted to live. The layout had become fragmented over time, creating a series of disconnected spaces that lacked visual continuity and natural flow.

Perhaps even more noticeably, the home felt dark. While the floor plan technically functioned, the interior lacked the quality of daylight that helps make a home feel warm, welcoming, and alive. Rather than inviting people in, many of the spaces felt enclosed and somewhat cavernous.

Instead of simply updating finishes or changing materials, we asked a deeper architectural question: How could the structure itself create a completely different experience?

Designing Around Light and Connection

The defining architectural move was to reimagine the center of the home.

By substantially raising the central living and entry volume, we were able to introduce clerestory windows that bring natural light deep into the heart of the house. This intervention transformed not only the amount of daylight entering the home but also the perception of space itself.

The living room and kitchen became connected by both light and volume. Rather than feeling separated, these spaces now work together as the social center of the home, creating a stronger relationship between family life, entertaining, and everyday living.

Natural light became an architectural material—one that changes throughout the day, creating depth, warmth, and visual interest that artificial lighting alone could never achieve.

Raising the central living volume and introducing clerestory windows dramatically changed both the quality of light and the experience of the home.

Architecture Is About More Than Appearance

Modern architecture is sometimes misunderstood as simply being a style characterized by clean lines or contemporary materials. While aesthetics certainly matter, thoughtful architecture begins much earlier than the selection of finishes.

It begins by asking the right questions.

How should a home make you feel?

How should light move through each room?

How can individual spaces feel connected while still serving different purposes?

How can an existing structure be transformed into something that feels intentional rather than pieced together?

When these questions guide the design process, the resulting architecture becomes timeless because it is rooted in experience rather than trends.

The Experience of Walking Through the Home

Today, walking into the Marietta Modern Home is an entirely different experience.

Where the interior once felt dark and confined, it now feels open, airy, and filled with natural light. The elevated ceiling draws your eyes upward while carefully positioned clerestory windows wash the living spaces with soft daylight throughout the day.

The result is a home that feels calm, warm, and welcoming—a place that encourages gathering, conversation, and everyday living.

Perhaps the greatest compliment a homeowner can receive is when guests remark that the home simply “feels right.” That feeling rarely happens by accident. It is the product of thoughtful architectural decisions made long before construction begins.

Design Starts with Better Questions

Every project is different, but our design process always begins with understanding how our clients want to experience their home—not just how they want it to look.

Whether we’re designing a contemporary custom home from the ground up or transforming an existing residence through renovation, we believe great architecture is created by solving problems with clarity, intention, and timeless design principles.
